Personal Background & Journey
Can you tell us a bit about your journey? How did your background as a barrister shape your current role at Diageo?
My journey into bartending started as a way to raise money for college after high school. I joined an agency promoting an energy drink in bars, and when cocktails were introduced into the campaign, I became the only person interested in learning mixology. That opportunity sparked my passion for the industry and shaped my career path.
My background in law helped me develop confidence, communication, and relationship-building skills, all of which are important in my role today as a Luxury Brand Ambassador at Diageo.
What inspired you to become a brand ambassador, especially in the luxury space?
I first interacted with the Diageo Kenya team while working as a bartender and was immediately drawn to the energy and passion they brought to events. I knew I wanted to build a career in that environment.
My appreciation for luxury grew while working with the late Chris Kirubi. Watching his attention to detail, from luxury cars to fashion and lifestyle, taught me that luxury is about quality, craftsmanship, and exclusivity.
Career & Brand Work at Diageo
What does a typical day look like for you as a Luxury Brand Ambassador?
There’s no typical day in this industry. One day I could be hosting a cocktail workshop, and the next attending an international luxury event or curating a premium dining experience for clients.
The role requires flexibility, creativity, and strong people skills because most of the work revolves around creating memorable consumer experiences.
What do you love most about working with Diageo’s luxury portfolio?
I love the stories behind the brands, the opportunity to travel, and the quality of the products. Diageo constantly invests in innovation and premium experiences, giving us a front-row seat to the future of luxury hospitality and spirits.
How do you tailor brand experiences to appeal to Kenya’s premium consumers?
It begins with understanding the consumer and what they want from an experience. My goal is to connect the right Diageo luxury brand with the right audience while ensuring the client achieves their objectives through the partnership.
What does “luxury” mean to you in the context of spirits and experiences?
Luxury is about intention, craftsmanship, and emotional connection. It’s not just about price — it’s about quality, authenticity, and creating memorable moments through exceptional experiences.
In Africa, luxury also means celebrating culture and incorporating local identity into premium experiences.
Have you had to overcome any stereotypes or challenges working in a male-dominated space?
Yes, especially in the early stages of my career. Even my father initially struggled to accept bartending as a respectable career path for a woman.
As a woman in this industry, you often have to work harder to prove yourself, but resilience and confidence have helped me navigate those challenges.
Gin Culture in Kenya
How would you describe the gin culture in Kenya?
Kenya’s gin culture has evolved rapidly. Consumers are now more interested in cocktails, flavor profiles, presentation, and premium drinking experiences.
What makes it exciting is the creativity — many bartenders are incorporating local herbs, fruits, and spices into cocktails, giving gin culture a uniquely Kenyan touch.
How do you position Tanqueray to resonate with both seasoned gin lovers and new consumers?
Tanqueray offers something for everyone. Tanqueray No. TEN is ideal for experienced gin lovers who enjoy classic cocktails, while Tanqueray Sevilla appeals to consumers looking for a lighter, refreshing introduction to gin.
The versatility of the brand makes it accessible to different tastes and occasions.
How do you bring the Tanqueray brand to life for Kenyan audiences?
Social media has played a huge role in helping me connect audiences with the brand. At one point, my Instagram handle was even “Wangari Tanqueray.”
I’ve also collaborated with bartenders and lifestyle events to position Tanqueray within luxury, fashion, and cocktail culture in Kenya.
What’s your personal favourite way to enjoy Tanqueray?
A Basil Smash cocktail. I love the fresh citrus and basil flavors, especially when paired with seafood.
Travel & Lifestyle
You’re a known travel enthusiast. How do travel and culture influence your work?
Travel has exposed me to different cultures and hospitality experiences around the world. It has also shaped my views on responsible drinking and consumer safety within nightlife culture.
I’ve become more intentional about promoting moderation and education within the industry.
Which destination has inspired you the most professionally or personally?
Professionally, Shanghai inspired me because of its precision, discipline, and commitment to excellence.
Personally, Morocco left a lasting impression through its beauty rituals, culture, and wellness traditions that celebrate femininity and self-care.
Women, Luxury and Leadership
As a woman representing global luxury brands, how do you define power and elegance?
Power is quiet confidence and authenticity. Elegance is refinement with personality — it’s about presence, simplicity, and attention to detail.
What advice do you have for women looking to pivot into luxury or lifestyle industries?
Don’t be afraid to take up space. The industry values creativity, passion, and authenticity.
Bring your unique perspective and stay open to opportunities, growth, and learning experiences.
Do you see Kenyan or African women influencing global luxury trends?
Absolutely. African women are redefining global luxury through fashion, beauty, hospitality, and storytelling.
There’s a growing appreciation for African creativity, authenticity, and cultural identity within luxury spaces globally.
Trends & Outlook
What luxury trends are emerging in Kenya or Africa that excite you?
I’m excited by Afro-fusion fashion, heritage-inspired beauty brands, sustainable luxury hospitality, and African fine dining experiences that celebrate local ingredients and culture.
These trends are reshaping how the world views African luxury.
How is Diageo adapting to modern luxury consumer expectations?
Today’s consumers value experiences, sustainability, authenticity, and emotional connection.
Diageo is responding through immersive experiences, collaborations, responsible sourcing, and sustainability initiatives like Project Rudisha, which promotes bottle recycling and environmental responsibility.
Fun & Personal Touch
Who or what inspires you daily?
I’m inspired by African women who continue breaking barriers and creating impact across industries.
Women like Wangari Maathai, alongside modern creatives and entrepreneurs, remind me of the importance of resilience, purpose, and authenticity.
My family — especially my aunt and sister — also inspire me daily through their strength and ambition.
