There is a version of the tablet conversation that has been repeating itself for about a decade. The tablet is great for consuming content. For actually working — for the kind of sustained, multi-layered productivity that a professional or a student or a creative person needs across a full day — you still need a laptop. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S12 series, available in Kenya from 7 October, is the most serious attempt yet to end that conversation.
Two models. One at 14.6 inches for the person who wants maximum real estate. One at 12.6 inches for the person who wants something that fits more naturally into a bag. Both running the latest 3nm processor, both shipping with Adobe Photoshop pre-loaded as a first for any Android tablet, both carrying a battery that lasts longer than most people's working day. Here is what you actually need to know.
The thinness is a headline, but it is not the point
At 5.1mm, the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra is Samsung's thinnest Galaxy Tab ever made. That is a remarkable engineering achievement, but it would be a hollow one if the thinness came at the cost of performance. It does not. The 3nm processor inside delivers 61% faster NPU processing, 19% faster CPU performance and 17% better GPU power compared to the Tab S11 Ultra. The 3D Vapor Chamber dissipates heat efficiently enough that demanding tasks — video editing sessions, complex design work, multi-window studying — stay fast and responsive rather than throttling after the first hour.
For the Nairobi professional or student whose day involves moving between a commute, a café and a desk, a device that is light enough to carry everywhere but powerful enough to actually work on everywhere is not a luxury. It is the point.
The battery changes the calculus
Up to 23 hours on the Tab S12 Ultra. Up to 21 hours on the Tab S12+. On a single charge.
Those numbers matter because they remove the anxiety that has always accompanied serious tablet use — the constant awareness of the percentage in the corner, the hunting for a power point in a coffee shop, the calculation of whether the charger is worth adding to the bag. A battery that genuinely outlasts the working day means you stop thinking about the battery and start thinking about the work.
When it does need charging, 45W fast charging takes it from flat to full in approximately 95 minutes. For most users, an overnight charge handles everything. For heavier users, 95 minutes is short enough to be done while lunch happens.
The screen deserves its own conversation
14.6 inches on the Ultra. 12.6 inches on the Plus, with slimmer bezels than the previous generation meaning more screen in the same overall footprint. Both Dynamic AMOLED 2X at up to 1,600 nits peak brightness. Both with Vision Booster that adjusts brightness in real time based on the light around you, so outdoor use does not require squinting and indoor use does not feel like staring into a lamp.
The four-channel spatial audio is twice the channels of the previous generation. For the student following a lecture, the creative watching reference material or the professional on a video call, audio that actually matches the quality of the display makes a noticeable difference to how long you can sustain focused work.
Adobe Photoshop on a tablet: this is the first time
The headline software detail — and it is a genuine first for Android tablets — is that Adobe Photoshop comes pre-loaded on the Galaxy Tab S12 series. Not a mobile-lite version. Photoshop, with an interface optimised for tablet use and full S Pen support, including AI features like Generative Fill and Image to Video powered by Adobe Firefly. Four months of the Photoshop mobile plan come free with the Tab S12 series.
This is significant beyond the obvious. For Kenya's growing community of digital artists, graphic designers, photographers and content creators who have been told for years that serious creative work requires a laptop or a desktop, having Photoshop on a tablet this powerful changes the conversation about what a mobile creative workflow can actually look like.
The S Pen that ships with both models is not a stylus in the generic sense. It is a precision input device that makes the difference between drawing on a screen and drawing on paper feel smaller than it has ever felt. Combined with Photoshop, the Tab S12 becomes the sketchbook, the darkroom and the design studio in one 5.1mm device.
The app ecosystem built around this launch
Beyond Photoshop, the Tab S12 series ships with an ecosystem of creative and productivity tools that add up to approximately $600 in value.
Notability arrives for the first time on Galaxy Tab with six months free, bringing AI-driven study tools and S Pen optimisation for note-taking that goes beyond what Samsung Notes does alone. Goodnotes offers clean note organisation with one year free. LumaFusion brings professional video editing at a 66% discount. Clip Studio Paint covers precision digital art with a six-month trial. Notion covers writing and planning with one month of the Plus plan included. GoodNotes, MyScript Math for solving handwritten equations, ArcSite for converting field sketches into CAD drawings — the breadth of what ships with the Tab S12 series reflects a product team that thought about who actually uses a tablet for serious work and built accordingly.
The six-month Google AI Pro trial adds Gemini and Gemini Notebook — the latter allowing users to bring notes, images, recordings and files into one workspace and generate summaries, podcasts and quizzes from them. For a student juggling multiple subjects or a professional managing complex research, that is a genuinely useful tool rather than a feature nobody uses.
Multi-window: the laptop comparison made practical
The Tab S12 series supports up to three simultaneous apps in Multi Window layout. In practice: a lecture on one section, Samsung Notes in the second, an AI assistant open in the third. The S Pen captures key questions as they arise. Note Assist summarises the notes automatically. The lecture never pauses.
This workflow — which previously required a laptop, a second screen or significant manual switching between apps — runs natively on a single pane of glass that fits in a bag. That is the practical argument for the Tab S12 series against both a laptop and a conventional tablet, and it is a strong one.
